How To Fly With Your Dog to Hawaii

How To Fly With Your Dog to Hawaii

Butters ready for vacation!

Butters has traveled successfully from the mainland to Hawaii (LAX to HNL) a dozen times, and we want to help break down the process for you in case you’re looking to do the same! If you’re planning to fly to Hawaii with your dog, and want them to be released at the airport upon arrival, aka Direct Airport Release, you will need to prepare months in advance. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know:

1. Microchipping

First, make sure that your dog is microchipped and that it’s registered. This is how the Hawaii Animal Quarantine Office verifies and identifies your dog matches your completed paperwork. If they cannot identify your dog, they will be subject to quarantine.

2. Hawaii is Rabies Free

The reason that Hawaii is so strict about animals coming in to the state is because they’re the only state that is rabies free and need to keep it that way! To skip the rabies quarantine, make sure you do these steps:

First, your pet must have received at least two rabies vaccinations in its lifetime, given at least 30 days apart. The most recent vaccination must be done more than 30 days before your dog arrives in Hawaii. Be sure to keep certificates for both vaccinations from your veterinarian, as you’ll need to provide these copies as proof to the Hawaii Animal Quarantine Office.

Second, To show your dog is rabies-free, you’ll need a passing FAVN rabies antibody test result from an approved lab, such as Auburn University, Kansas State University, the University of Missouri, or the DOD Food Analysis and Diagnostic Lab in Texas. We requested the FAVN test from our vet, and they sent in the sample for us. Butters’ test was done by Kansas State University, and it took about a month. The test results then get sent to Hawaii Animal Quarantine Office for you. Some vet offices do not assist with travel to Hawaii due to the complex nature, so make sure to ask first if your vet is able to assist. For example, Modern Animal does not offer this service and outsources complex or international pet travel requests to All Paws Express.

  • The lab must receive your dog’s blood sample more than 30 days and less than 36 months before your pet arrives in Hawaii. Even with a passing result, if your dog arrives on Oahu before the 30-day waiting period is complete, they won’t qualify for early release and will be placed in quarantine at your expense.
  • You may request a copy of the test results for your records directly from your veterinarian, not the lab. I also suggest calling the quarantine office to confirm that they received the test results. This most recent time that we did the FAVN, they thought they didn’t have Butters’ results but discovered that my vet office accidentally mistyped one number of my microchip number! Luckily I checked, and there was enough time to get it corrected and matched up.

3. Prepare and Submit Documentation

To qualify your dog for Hawaii’s Direct Airport Release program, you’ll need to submit several important documents. The full list is available on The Animal Quarantine Information Page in Checklist 1 (unless you’re traveling to a neighbor island like Kauaʻi, Maui, or Hawaiʻi Island—then use the neighbor island checklist). Always check the site to make sure you’re using the most updated checklist and AQS-279 Form.

📋 What You’ll Need:

  1. Completed Dog & Cat Import Form (AQS-279)
  2. Two original rabies vaccination certificates, signed in ink by your veterinarian. My vet’s signature was electronic, but it was an original color copy, and the quarantine office accepted it.
  3. An original health certificate, issued within 14 days of your pet’s arrival in Hawaii. I made an appointment with our vet to do a health check and provide the health certificate for us. Make sure to set an appointment for this in case your vet is busy within that 14 day window prior to your travel. This is the one form that it’s okay not to mail in with everything else, and can be handed to the quarantine office in person upon arrival. You’ll want to make a few copies because the airline may also want to keep one when you check in.
  4. Proof of tick and tapeworm treatment, provided by your vet. This proof is part of the health certificate. If you usually administer your dog’s tick and tapeworm medication, you may want to time it accordingly since the health certificate requires your vet to indicate that they administered it.
  5. Payment:
    • $185 for Direct Airport Release, or
    • $244 for the 5-Day-or-Less Program
    • Payable by cashier’s check to the Department of Agriculture

✉️ How to Submit:

  • Mail all documents together so they arrive at least 10 days before your arrival. Try not to cut it close, as sometimes mail carriers experience delays. One time, our documents made it to the office exactly 10 days prior to arrival, and when I called the office, they said that I could have risked needing to quarantine.
  • Address:
    Animal Quarantine Station
    99-951 Halawa Valley Street
    Aiea, Hawaii, 96701
  • Send with a return receipt or use an overnight carrier with tracking

4. Booking Flights

As of this year, I believe the only airline that allows pet in cabin into Hawaii is Hawaiian Airlines. Alaska Airlines used to as well, but they merged with Hawaiian, and it looks like all of the routes from the mainland to Hawaii are now serviced by Hawaiian.

Carrier size: Hawaiian Airlines’ pet carrier size restriction is the most restrictive I’ve seen out of all the airlines I’ve flown domestically. The maximum allowable pet carrier size is 17” long x 11” wide x 9.5” tall, be composed entirely of soft material with TWO OR MORE ventilation panels, be able to close securely and fully encase the animal, and be able to be stowed properly beneath the seat in front of you. Make sure to click on the COMPLETE PET IN CABIN TRAVEL GUIDE to ensure you’re referencing the most up to date info here: https://hawaiianair.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/659/~/pets-traveling-in-the-cabin

And yes, they will take out a measuring tape and literally measure the carrier. We almost weren’t allowed onto the flight because our carrier didn’t have the approved number of ventilation panels in 2024 (at that time, they required 4 and ours had 3).

Plan your flights carefully around the operating hours of the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility (AAQHF) at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL): 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closing early at 3:30 p.m. on weekends and state holidays). Pets arriving after hours won’t be released until the next morning between 8:00–10:00 a.m. If not picked up during that window, they’ll be transferred to the Animal Quarantine Station in Halawa. This has never happened to Butters, but we know of a few friends who have had to do this and had to wait to be reunited!

Pro tip: I always book the earliest flight into HNL! The lines are shorter and you don’t risk having to leave your dog for one night of quarantine just because you were waiting around past 4:30.

If your final destination isn’t Oahu and you’re going to a neighboring island, you’ll need to complete Checklist 2.

5. Direct Airport Release

You’ve arrived in Hawaii, now what? Your airline will have a designated staff worker waiting at the gate for you and if there are other travelers on your flight that traveled with a pet, you may have to wait until you’ve all deplaned. Then the airline staff will escort you to the Animal quarantine office, which is about a 10 minute walk. Most of the time they do not allow your pet to go potty because technically they need to stay in the carrier, but I’ve had a few friendly staff workers allowed us to stop by a grassy area first. The office lobby is quite small, so typically only one person per pet is allowed inside. Make sure to have your health certificate ready, and if this is a re-entry (not your dog’s first time), then you will need your release card from your prior visit to show as proof and pay a reduced re-entry fee. The office worker will take your dog (crated) to check their microchip and examine them behind closed doors. You cannot go in with them. The staff will ask you for your ID and health certificate and if any additional fees need to be taken care of, you are able to pay via credit card. I’ve waited between 15 min to an hour for Butters to be released. Once released, you’re done!!

Butters wearing blue bandanna “My Brother Has Feet”

Our family is growing, and we want to make my transition to big brother as smooth and successful as possible! Here’s how we are preparing for the arrival of my baby brother. Hopefully this list helps any of you who are also expecting now or in the future!

  • Make prior arrangements for dog sitting at a moments notice once mom goes into labor
    • Pack an overnight bag with 4 days worth of essentials (mom could be in the hospital for more than a day or two if a c-section is required or other complications).
    • Make a detailed guide for the sitter with your schedule, feeding/walking instructions, emergency contact info, and anything about your quirks or routine that they should know.
    • Find and hire a suitable pet sitter in your area on Rover! Click to receive $20 off
  • Get familiar with all of the changes in the house
    • Sniffing and exploring the nursery early on. This way, I’m less anxious or excited by the unfamiliarity.
    • Designating a bed spot for me in the nursery by mom’s recliner. Practicing staying in my spot and getting rewarded with a treat. This is in hopes that I won’t try to jump into mom’s lap while it’s baby feeding time.
    • Humans mimicking movements that will be new, such as carrying around a baby and bouncing the baby bouncer. Treats for neutral behavior, of course!
  • Cry training: Getting familiar with the sound of baby crying by playing recordings and getting rewarded for neutral behavior, laying down in a designated place (bed, mat).
  • Getting familiar with baby’s scent: mom will be sending a swaddle home from the hospital with a family member who will let me sniff it, before baby is brought home.
  • Plan for first moments back home to set everyone up for a smooth welcome and introduction
    • Dad will bring baby in the house, no interaction allowed yet
    • Mom will greet me one-on-one outside so I get to tell her how much I missed her!
    • Once I’m calm, I’ll be allowed to be in the same room as the baby where I can detect his scent without coming up to him. We will take it slowly to build closer proximity
  • Visitor protocols: There will be visitors coming and going, and this can be stressful for us pups if we’re not used to it and are territorial. I am selective about who I am friendly with, so the best course of action for me is to have a trusted human hold me from afar anytime the front door is opened.
  • Store rewards throughout the home
    • Treats in each area of the house to help reinforce good behavior in real time
    • Make sure we’re well stocked with my favorite treats!
  • Plan for sleeping arrangements: I am used to sleeping in my own donut bed by my humans. We’re remaining flexible to see if I want to stay in the same room or will want to sleep elsewhere once baby joins us, so I have a familiar bed or crate in 3 other places in the house. Sometimes I like having my own space! Also, in case I have trouble sleeping, we have some calming treats (PetFinn.com Calming Aid – save w/ code BUTTERSPUP20) as well as vet-prescribed sleepy meds on hand (Trazodone).
  • Schedule one-on-one time: On set days of the week, mom will take me on a walk and play with me uninterrupted while baby is sleeping. Especially during the first week, if mom is able to take me on a walk, we are prioritizing it. This way I know I haven’t been replaced and am still an important part of the family.
  • Socialization: For those of you pups who love to play with other pups, it may be a good idea to schedule play dates and doggy day care in advance. I personally love being a solo dog and sniffing butts on my walks are all I need 🙂
  • Prep enrichment activities: To keep me entertained and mentally stimulated, mom prepped frozen lick mats and kong toys for me that anyone can quickly grab out of the freezer to give to me. These help keep me busy at times when I may not be able to have as much playtime. You can use various bases of your choice such as plain yogurt, peanut butter, wet food, or smashed bananas! Then top it with crumbled treats or kibble for a fun crunch.
  • Grooming: Get freshly groomed so I’m all cleaned up for baby’s arrival, and pre-set the next grooming appointment.
  • Being open to seeking help: Even with all of the careful preparation, it may still be a difficult time of transition! We loved our dog trainer who helped us with behavioral concerns when I was first adopted, and would welcome having a trainer work with us again. We believe strongly in doing everything we can to integrate the family, help each other adapt to a new norm, and give everyone (including me) lots of grace in the process.

Can’t wait to welcome baby bro home!

Hands-Free Pet Sling For Small Dogs

Hands-Free Pet Sling For Small Dogs

I love tagging along with mom wherever she goes, but there are times that it’s better for me to be carried than to walk around on my own! As much as I enjoy being carried in her arms, mom needs to be hands-free to run errands.

At first, I was a little skeptical about getting into the Tomkas Pet Sling, but after a couple of tries and some treats for encouragement, I got accustomed to my kangaroo pouch! The material is soft enough to be cozy and comfy, but thick enough to be durable. Mom likes the adjustable buckle version since we can get it to fit just right. It also has some neat built-in features as seen below:

I love hanging my arm out which worried mom that I’d fall out, but the buckle holds me in and the button enclosure secures the sides of the carrier so I’m safe. Mom likes the small side zipper pocket where we can fit extra poo bags, treats, keys, etc. Also, when the carrier gets dirty, we can just pop it in the washing machine!

I recommend the Tomkas Pet Sling for all my furry friends who weigh between 5-10 pounds! I weigh about 7 lbs and there is plenty of space to expand. This carrier is a comfortable way to get around town while allowing your humans to be hands-free. It comes in various colors and patterns too. Hope you love it as much as I do!

A Distracted Dog Is A Calm Dog

A Distracted Dog Is A Calm Dog

So many situations make me anxious: getting my nails trimmed, taking a bath, waiting for mom to finish work, and the list goes on. Mom found an amazing solution that we’re so excited to share with you!

“Lickit Buddy Relax” Lick Pad

Meet the Lickit Buddy Relax: a slow feeder mat made of food-grade silicone with suction cups all along on the back so you can stick it to most surfaces. I love peanut butter, so mom smeared some on to the lick mat for me to enjoy! This was the perfect distraction while I had my paws soaking in a medicated bath and wasn’t allowed to move for 5 minutes. There’s no other way I would’ve lasted that long on my own! Before I knew it, my paw soak was done and there was nothing to be anxious about!

You can use peanut butter, smashed bananas, yogurt, or any other soft dog food. To keep the distraction going even longer, you can put your food of choice on the mat and freeze it before giving it to your dog.

Air Travel Update: Emotional Support Animals

Air Travel Update: Emotional Support Animals

Listen up, my globetrotter pals. Big changes are coming for pets traveling by air, and it’s not lookin’ good for all of us ESA’s! The US Department of Transportation issued new guidelines that say Emotional Support Animals are no longer considered service animals. Unfortunately, too many irresponsible travelers were taking advantage of the system, bringing all sorts of untrained animals on board. There has been an uptick in animal misbehavior, complaints of injuries, and damage to the planes.

If you’d like to read the DOT’s final ruling on your own, here’s the announcement: https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/us-department-transportation-announces-final-rule-traveling-air-service-animals

For everyone else, here’s the cliffs notes version!

  • Emotional Support Animals will no longer be considered service animals
  • Depending on the airline, travelers may be charged a fee to bring their pet on board and the pet may be subjected to flying in cargo
  • Psychiatric service animals will still be treated the same as other service animals because they’re trained to perform tasks for the benefit of the person with a disability
  • Airlines are allowed to limit the number of service animals traveling with a single passenger with a disability to 2 animals

As the major U.S. airlines start to release their new guidelines, I will update this post with their rules and regulations below! If you already have travel booked, please check with the airline directly to see if your ESA will be honored for your trip.

Pet Insurance

Pet Insurance

Happy New Year, furriends! Just like people, us dogs will inevitably have health concerns and accidents that result in doctors visits sooner or later. To help your family have financial peace of mind for times like these, it’s really important to have good insurance coverage!

If you’re considering getting pet insurance, read on!

Why should you get pet insurance? For one, accidents happen when you least expect it. The last thing you want is for your family to be stuck deciding to forgo necessary treatment for you due to cost, which happens too often when people are unprepared. Secondly, depending on your breed, you may be more prone to certain diseases and health concerns. This can range from minor ear infections to dental issues to major organ failure. A good way to find out what you may be at greater risk of having is to take a DNA test, like Embark! That way, your humans can ensure you get good preventive care and enjoy life to its fullest. With these in mind, vet bills can still be very costly for major procedures and treatments. Your family can save a lot of money by having good insurance coverage that will take on the bulk of the cost.

What should you look for? First, see if your humans have discounted pet insurance offered through their employers. Some offer a lower monthly premium than the listed market price. Others will even allow you to pay for the premium pre-tax! Second, pay attention to any prerequisites such as age restrictions, health screenings, and blackout periods. Third, take a look at how they handle pre-existing conditions and any specific health concerns you have, as well as any automatic rate changes due to age. Last, compare the deductible, reimbursement levels, premium, and any sign-up fees to pick a plan that’s best for you!

Here are the pet insurance plans I researched and would recommend:

  • HealthyPaws (Customizable reimbursement level, includes coverage for behavioral treatment, easy online claims process)
  • PetPlan (Sick visit exam fees covered, comprehensive dental illness, VirtualVet visits, some behavioral treatment)
  • Trupanion (Customizable annual deductible, includes some dental illness coverage and cremation)
  • VCA CareClub (Membership, not insurance! Wellness plans that include vaccines and exams catered to your dog’s age – great for puppies)

Stay healthy!

Ouch! Nail Trim Mishap

Ouch! Nail Trim Mishap

If you have a fear of trimming dogs’ nails, you are not alone! One of the biggest fears amongst dog owners is accidentally clipping nails too short that it cuts the “quick”. The quick is the soft, pink tissue in the center of the nail which has a vein and nerve. It helps nail growth and provides sensation to the paw. If a dog’s nails are not properly maintained, the quick may become overgrown, leading to pain and nailbed issues. If your dog has dark nails like me, it makes it especially difficult to avoid cutting the quick!

Last week, mom noticed that my nails were getting a little longer where they were touching the ground when I stand. My upcoming groomer appointment isn’t for another few weeks, so she decided to give me a little at-home trim. Mom has used dog clippers in the past so she wasn’t too worried, and of course I trust her with my life! We got through a few nails easy peasy, but then… CLIP! OUCH! One got cut just a little too deep and I let out the loudest yelp 😢 I was scared, mom was scared!

bandaged dog toe

My quick was peeping out of my nail and it hadn’t started bleeding out yet. Mom put a tiny bit of Vaseline on the tip and tried to wrap my toe gently, but that didn’t work very well. The wrap fell off when I moved my paw, and the quick started to bleed!

Mom put some baking soda on the tip of my toenail, rewrapped my whole paw and made me sit/lay until she could run to the store to pick up some first aid items. We got styptic powder and some bitter bandage tape, and that really did the trick! I recommend all dog owners to get some to keep on hand in case you get any minor cuts.

The styptic powder helps the bleeding stop and keeps the cut from getting infected. Mom applied it by dabbing a damp Q-tip into the powder then applying it to my wound. You can also pour a little into a shallow dish and dip the wound into the powder. The sustained pressure from the bandage also helped the bleeding stop and kept the powder from getting everywhere. I tried to lick the bandage and it tasted bitter, yuck!

I was a very good boy and stayed off my paw so my nail could heal! After about an hour of leaving my paw wrapped up, mom checked on it to make sure the bleeding stopped. Then, we rinsed off my paw gently with shampoo and water, and I rested it overnight before walking around again.

Lessons learned:
– Dog nail trims are necessary, but use caution if your nails are dark and you cannot see the quick! Try to trim only a tiny bit at a time
– Accidents happen, and it’s best to be prepared! Get some styptic powder to keep in a first aid kit
– Stay calm and show your dog love with hugs and treats so they don’t associate nail trimming with the pain. Your dog’s nail will heal and be fine in no time! I can confidently say I now know from experience 🙂

A friend recommended that I try using a Dremel nail grinder, so I ordered one and can’t wait to show you how it works! If you use the Dremel, let me know how you like it.

Best Affordable Harness For Small Dogs

Best Affordable Harness For Small Dogs

It took a few tries before I found a harness that I liked, but I’m so glad I found one! It not only fits perfectly, but also looks stylish and is very affordable!

Why use a harness? Collars do a fine job for some dogs. I still wear a collar on days when I’m not going to be doing a lot of walking leashed. However, harnesses have a lot of great benefits! Unlike collars, harnesses disperse the pressure placed on the body rather than concentrated on the neck. This helps to prevent issues like minor choking, straining the neck, or even a collapsed trachea. Harnesses also discourage dogs from pulling as much as collars. Lastly, a properly fitted harness tends to be more secure than a collar – the last thing mom wants to worry about is me slipping my head out of my collar if I’m trying to run off!

Recommendation: The Voyager Step-in Lock Pet Harness in All Weather Mesh

Dog harness front view
Dog harness side view

Looks pretty classy and comfy, right? My favorite things about the Voyager Step-in Lock Pet Harness are:
– Comfortable mesh material! I can be fully mobile without rubbing or chafing
– Adjustable at the neck and the chest, and doesn’t shift around when I walk
– Clip around neck sits on top of padded material, so the plastic doesn’t pull on my fur
– Easy to step into without pulling over my head
– Two D-rings on the back so my leash can attach higher or lower down my back
– Only $13.99 (as of 10/27/2020)!

Fitting: Make sure you measure properly when you order your appropriate size! I am wearing an XS and I have it adjusted about the max widths. I originally purchased the size Small, since my neck is about 11 inches and chest is 16 inches, but I wasn’t able to get it to fit snug enough.

So there you have it, guys and gals! The Voyager Step-in Lock Pet Harness is Butters Approved and is my pick for the Best Affordable Harness for Small Dogs, like me!

If you’re looking for alternative options, here are my runner ups:
Puppia RiteFit Harness: Similar quality and fit, but 30% more expensive
Voyager Step-in Air Dog Harness/Vest: Features reflective bands, but only one location for leash attachment and less fit adjustability

My Breed Reveal

My Breed Reveal

Time to find out about my ancestors and figure out what mix of dog breeds I actually am! My mom has been wondering if I’m really a mix of Maltese, Shih Tzu and Yorkie ever since my Gotcha Day. She did a bunch of research and found a company called Embark, which is the leader in canine genetics. Embark’s DNA platform was developed at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and utilizes over 200K genetic markers! My favorite thing about Embark is that it shows you your family tree and finds your dog relatives 🙂 The more dogs that take the test, the more scientific studies can be done to end preventable diseases in dogs everywhere. Read to the bottom for discounts on your own Embark kit!

After my kit was ordered, it arrived pretty fast. If you want to watch me unbox and do the test, I posted it on Instagram and Tiktok! Mom helped me do the swab, sent it back to the lab, and it took only about two weeks to receive my RESULTS. Drumroll please…

Butters’ Breed Mix: Shorkiepoo!

Whoa! Were you as surprised as I was at the results? I’m mostly Shih Tzu, but no trace of Maltese at all! Mom also didn’t guess that I had any Poodle in me, but apparently my dog dad was a Yorkiepoo mix 🙂
